Smartercities.org, the online resource center of the Natural Resources Defense Council has named 22 cities in the United States "The Smartest Cities in 2010" for the fact that they invest in energy efficiency and conservation measures, and for their general green power investment. Cities are currently having a difficult time, as some of them struggle to find the financial means to maintain their services. The main motivator for one Smarter City, Columbus, was economic necessity. This city came up with a plan to reduce municipality spending and raise energy efficiency over the next decade. Quality of life was a motivator as well and Columbus is not the only city doing this. Various cities across the U.S. are examining the supply and use of municipal energy, and considering what they can improve in order to do it better and more responsibly. These cities take into consideration the impact on the budget, environment, health, and concerns about quality of life.
There are many "sustainability factors" to be considered, and energy is the main one the Smarter Cities project team is planning to analyze. By doing so it hopes to determine the cities that will be the leaders, the ones putting the best practices in place, passing model legislation, testing innovative new programs and investing a lot into green power. The director of the research project, Paul McRandle, says that they are focusing on energy because of the links between consumption patterns, energy production, health concerns and the environment. Half of U.S. electricity comes from coal, and burning this coal releases mercury, heat-trapping pollutants, particulates, sulfur dioxide, and various other smog pollutants which pose dangers to your health.
